How to measure your calf

You need a soft tape measure. If you do not have one, a piece of string and a ruler works just as well.

The steps

  1. Measure in the morning Before your legs have had a chance to swell. Evening measurements will read larger than your true size and can push you into a size you do not need.
  2. Stand up Feet flat on the floor, weight even. Sitting changes the shape of the calf.
  3. Find the widest point Usually about a third of the way up from your ankle. Run your hand up the back of your calf and you will feel where it peaks.
  4. Wrap the tape around Snug against the skin but not pulling in. You should be able to slip a finger under it.
  5. Write the number down In inches. Measure both legs if you can. They are rarely identical, and you size to the larger one.
